Author’s Notes
Lance’s Routine
Depending on what’s on the agenda and where he’s patrolling, his morning routine is doing a few quick calisthenics to shake the sleep off, dress, brush his teeth and shave, finger-comb his hair back, grab some trail rations, and head out. If he has time, he likes to take a few minutes to read at breakfast. If he’s not patrolling, sword practice or a morning walk are on the agenda.
In the evening, if the day included patrols, he showers, stretches, and preps supplies for the next day if he’s going back out on patrol. If not, he likes relaxing by the fireplace when it’s cold, or outside on the roof when it’s nice out. Then it’s lights out for the day.
If he’s in a relationship, his significant other takes priority and he never misses taking a few minutes with them, even if it’s only a quick embrace, kiss and a few whispered words on the way out the door. In the evening, he loves nothing more than holding them close and talking about whatever comes to mind, occasionally nodding off in their arms if it’s been a long day.
Have you reached the top of the Ginger Island volcano? What are you waiting for?
This must be the mountain core… I take a step around the corner and look up… there before the forge stands a tall man with flaming red hair, wearing a from-fitting tunic over his loose pants and tall boots. He’s focused on his work and hasn’t seen me yet, but it’s obvious he knows someone is here.
Lance: “Few adventurers have scaled Mount Kohldur, once a great dwarf kingdom. Your achievement is a testament to your ambition and perseverance. This forge is capable of enchanting weapons and tools. It can even combine the divine properties of magical rings, a reward suited for someone of your stature… um…”
The fiery-haired man’s voice trails off as his eyes meet mine, his well-rehearsed speech forgotten. CLUNK Oh, I think I dropped my… uh… gulp
Lance: “Oh, you must be exhausted, here. Have some water, the heat takes some getting used to and I’m sure you’ve had a tough battle getting here.”
Lance steps towards me with the fluid grace and confidence of a jungle cat, handing me a water bottle… golden flecks in his violet eyes glittering in the lava’s ruddy glow. Is that… some kind of radiance around him? I swear I can hear angels somewhere… everything is getting sparkly… Oh man, I’m grinning like a teenage girl meeting her favorite boy band, he’s going to think I’m a total idiot.
Lance: “Ahem! Oh, please forgive me, I lost my train of thought for a moment. I’m Lance, by the way. You must be the farmer from Pelican Town, Marlon mentioned you. He gave me quite a glowing report of your skills with a weapon.”
farmer: “I-I… Um, yeah, that’s me…” Damn, that was awful! If only I could go back and come around the corner again, at least I could come up with a proper introduction… I didn’t even tell him my name. Suddenly remembering my manners, I reach out to shake his hand, introducing myself. His grip is firm, and his hand warm from the heat off the forge. A tingle rushes up my arm as I stare at him shamelessly.
Lance: “You’re not exactly what I expected, you’re… um… younger and very… ah, never mind. grins I work for the First Slash, you can usually find me there, or at least learn my whereabouts.”
